BS 5308-kabler er designet for å bære kommunikasjons- og kontrollsignaler i en rekke installasjonstyper, inkludert de som finnes i den petrokjemiske industrien. Signalene kan være av analog, data- eller stemmetype og fra en rekke svingere som trykk, nærhet og mikrofon. Del 1 Type 3 kabler er generelt konstruert der det kreves større grad av mekanisk og kjemisk beskyttelse eller direkte nedgraving på passende dyp. Kollektivt og individuelt screenede par er tilgjengelige innenfor utvalget. For installasjoner hvor brann, røykutslipp og giftige gasser utgjør en potensiell risiko for liv og utstyr.
